Architectural drawings in Kew, beside the Gardens
A Kew house is judged against more than its own street. The Green and the Gardens set the frame, and the council's appraisals say so in terms. We prepare planning and listed building drawings that respect that frame, from a free constraints check.

04The brief
Living in the Gardens' buffer zone
The council's Kew Green appraisal states that the conservation area is under the buffer zone of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew World Heritage Site. Kew Gardens was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 3 July 2003 and is registered Grade I on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest.
The practical effect is that a visible change to a roof, boundary or frontage is read with the Green and the Gardens in mind. We show the proposal in context from the street, so the officer can see it against what surrounds it.

Roof tiles, boundaries and Article 4 in Kew
The Kew Green appraisal is specific about materials: Original clay roof tiles should be retained and repaired like for like; concrete tiles and imitation slates avoided. On frontages it adds: Where they contribute to character, boundary treatments should be preserved and lost features reinstated.
Classes removed are not stated on the council list page; the page says Article 4 directions cover extensions, new doors and windows, painting brickwork, removing chimneys, replacing front gardens and boundary walls with hard surfaces. Questions
Does the World Heritage Site affect my Kew house?
It can. The council's Kew Green appraisal states that the conservation area is under the buffer zone of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew World Heritage Site. We check where your address falls in the free constraints check.
Can I use concrete tiles when I re-roof in Kew Green?
The Kew Green appraisal advises against it: Original clay roof tiles should be retained and repaired like for like; concrete tiles and imitation slates avoided. Check before ordering, and send us the address so we read the guidance for your street.
Which Kew roads are covered by an Article 4 direction?
The council's list has entries for Kew Green, Kew Gardens and Lawn Crescent. Classes removed are not stated on the council list page; the page says Article 4 directions cover extensions, new doors and windows, painting brickwork, removing chimneys, replacing front gardens and boundary walls with hard surfaces. We read the direction for your road before drawing, so a window, door or front-garden change is not a surprise.
Can I replace the railings or front boundary of a Kew house?
The Kew Green appraisal asks for care: Where they contribute to character, boundary treatments should be preserved and lost features reinstated. We draw the existing boundary first and show any change against it, so the officer can see what is kept and what is reinstated.
