Architectural drawings for Chiswick period houses

Chiswick's best-known streets are controlled in different ways. Bedford Park carries an Article 4 direction, Old Chiswick and Strand on the Green sit in river policy areas, and some areas are recently designated. We draw to whichever rules your address meets.

    04The brief

Bedford Park and the Ealing boundary

Hounslow Council states that Article 4 directions currently apply to the Gunnersbury and Bedford Park conservation areas. Bedford Park straddles the borough boundary: the west side of Woodstock Road and westward, including The Avenue, lie within the London Borough of Ealing.

That boundary matters, because the planning authority depends on which side of the line a house stands. We confirm the council before we draw, so the application goes to the right place.

    05The detail

Old Chiswick, Strand on the Green and the Thames policy area

Most of the Old Chiswick Conservation Area lies within the Thames Policy Area; Chiswick Eyot is a Local Nature Reserve and Metropolitan Open Land. Strand on the Green's additional protections include the Thames Policy Area, Metropolitan Open Land (tideway and Oliver's Island) and an Architectural Priority Area.

For the riverside houses the council's appraisal adds a design point: House boundary treatments along the riverside generally should be carefully preserved to keep the open character. Old Chiswick Conservation Area was designated on 1 May 1969. Strand on the Green Conservation Area was designated on 7 November 1968 and extended in 2001.

    Newer designations to check

Not every Chiswick area is old. Chiswick High Road and the Glebe Estate were added to the list more recently, and Turnham Green Conservation Area was designated on 4 September 1975 and extended in 2001 and 2020. Each area's own document, where one exists, is what the officer reads your drawings against.

The borough counts 33 conservation areas and 3 Article 4 directions, so the check on a Chiswick address is rarely a formality.

Listed houses, roofs and what they cost

The Hounslow list runs to 519 entries, 32 of them Grade I, and 93.5% of its latest listed building consent decisions were grants. A listed house in Chiswick starts from the borough page: listed building consent drawings in Hounslow.

A mansard starts at £845; read mansard roof drawings in Chiswick for the roof test. Further up the river, see Richmond and Kew.

    Questions

Is Bedford Park under an Article 4 direction?

Hounslow Council states that Article 4 directions currently apply to the Gunnersbury and Bedford Park conservation areas. We check your address against it in the free constraints check.

Which Chiswick conservation areas were designated recently?

Chiswick High Road and the Glebe Estate are later additions to the borough's list. We check whether your area has a published appraisal and draw to it.

My house is by the river at Strand on the Green. What extra applies?

Strand on the Green's additional protections include the Thames Policy Area, Metropolitan Open Land (tideway and Oliver's Island) and an Architectural Priority Area. We read the Strand on the Green appraisal for your house, draw the river front as found and show the officer how any new work sits behind it.

Which council decides my Bedford Park house?

It depends on the side of the line. Bedford Park straddles the borough boundary: the west side of Woodstock Road and westward, including The Avenue, lie within the London Borough of Ealing. We confirm the council from your address before drawing, so the application goes to the right place.
