Listed building consent drawings for Enfield homes
Enfield has only 3 Grade I entries but 22 at Grade II*, so its list leans towards buildings of more than local interest. Add 24 conservation areas and 33 Article 4 direction areas and a listed house here is rarely governed by one control alone. We untangle the layers first, then draw the application so officers can see what is kept.

02The brief
The unusual top end of Enfield's list
Of 301 entries, 274 are Grade II, which is where most owners will find themselves. The Grade II* group of 22 is large beside the Grade I figure, and a house in that group is a building the national system treats as particularly important.
Higher grade means more weight on the heritage side of the decision. Our drawings for a Grade II* house carry fuller measured detail on original joinery, plasterwork and roof structure, because the officer will want to see precisely what the proposal would disturb.

06The detail
Planning round the national tests
We hold no Enfield rule written for listed buildings, and we do not make one up. The decision rests on national policy. Proposals affecting heritage assets need an assessment of significance (including setting) proportionate to the asset's importance. On weighting it gives a plain instruction: Substantial weight to the conservation of designated heritage assets.
A drawing set built for that test starts from the asset. Each sheet shows existing fabric, the proposed change and the reason for it, so harm and benefit can be weighed without hunting through the file.
Where conservation areas and Article 4 meet a listing
The council's 24 conservation areas are one overlay. The Article 4 direction areas are another, and they remove permitted development rights that an unlisted neighbour would still enjoy. A listed house in both gets the consent route for the building and the area controls for anything outside it.
22 Enfield entries are on the Heritage at Risk Register, and 61.2% of households live in a house, so a listed Enfield house is often a whole dwelling with its own plot.
Consent or certificate? Choosing the right question to ask
Owners sometimes ask whether they can simply request a certificate of lawfulness for proposed works to a listed building. That certificate carries no application fee, but it answers a narrower question than consent does. It tells you whether works need permission and does not grant it.
We quote the drawings for either route as a fixed fee after a free constraints check. The mistake that cannot be redrawn away is starting work without consent. Works without consent: up to 6 months' imprisonment or a fine on summary conviction; up to 2 years or a fine on indictment.
Decisions and companion applications
Enfield decided 24 applications to alter or extend a listed building in its latest four quarters and granted 75%. That leaves room for refusals and withdrawals, so quality of drawings matters.
A new roof storey is drawn in mansard roof drawings in Enfield and a lower floor in basement conversion drawings in Enfield. The listed building consent drawings hub covers the national picture, and Kensington and Chelsea shows a borough that publishes detailed local rules.

Questions
Does Enfield have its own listed building rules?
None that our data holds, so we work from the national tests. If the council publishes guidance for your address, the free constraints check picks it up.
What does a Grade II* listing mean for my Enfield house?
The need for consent is the same, but the heritage weight is greater, so more of the original fabric deserves protection in the drawings. We read the entry to see which features the listing singles out.
Is there a fee to ask whether works to my listed house are lawful?
A certificate of lawfulness for proposed works to a listed building carries no application fee. Our drawings for it are a fixed quote after a free check.
